An ancient plant, a skull, a few fungi, and Saturn – with a cat quietly keeping watch.
The horsetail rises from the skull in this study of Equisetum arvense, bringing together some of the qualities long associated with the plant: endurance, structure, mineral form, decay, and the passage of time.
A survivor from the ancient world, horsetail has changed remarkably little over hundreds of millions of years. Its segmented stems and high silica content have given it an almost mineral character, while its traditional association with Saturn places it within an older symbolic language of boundaries, ageing, bones, and things that endure.
Yet the horsetail is not separate from the softer world around it. It is a plant of damp ground, carrying with it the memory of the ancient wetlands in which its ancestors flourished. The fungi growing beside it belong to that same world – the world of moisture, decay, decomposition, and the continual return of life to the earth.
There is a quiet tension here between the two sides of nature: what grows, what decays, what hardens, and what returns to the earth. Above it all, Saturn watches over the scene – a reminder of time, limitation, mortality, and the structures that remain.
And then there is the cat.
Because even in the face of mortality and the great machinery of time, someone has to keep an eye on things.
Part botanical study, part symbolic curiosity, part quiet meditation on nature and mortality – this piece belongs to the stranger corners of the herbarium.

Such great quality of the material which is very soft..the fit is as expected and true to size. The printing is great..I have put it through many washes already (favorite shirt!) and it hasn't cracked or peeled. I do wash inside out and don't dry in the dryer. I love the art so much. Definitely plan to buy more from this retailer!
