Horsetail Cat Study I
For centuries, horsetail was understood as a plant that resisted what spread, softened, and dissolved. In older symbolic traditions, Saturn stood in opposition to the Moon. Where lunar forces were associated with moisture, rapid growth, decay, and the fertile world of fungi, Saturn represented dryness, structure, endurance, and the preservation of form. Within this symbolic framework, horsetail came to embody these Saturnian qualities. Rich in silica and remarkable for its rigid, segmented structure, it was traditionally used to strengthen weakened tissue, dry excess moisture, and support the body’s natural boundaries.
Even today, horsetail teas and fermented preparations are valued in gardening, where they are applied to help protect plants from mildew, mold, and other fungal diseases during periods of prolonged humidity. Yet perhaps the plant’s greatest fascination lies elsewhere. Horsetail belongs to one of the oldest surviving plant lineages on Earth, tracing its ancestry back to the vast swamp forests of the Carboniferous period. Long before flowers, fruit, or cultivated beauty came to dominate the landscape, its ancestors already covered the earth.
The plant that still emerges each spring remains strikingly faithful to that ancient design: austere, repetitive, mineral-like, and strangely unchanged. This illustration is part of the Silent Cat Herbarium series, exploring the meeting point of natural history, traditional herbal knowledge, and the symbolic worlds that have grown around plants through the centuries.

- Wash with Similar Colors – Or face the wrath of mismatched laundry chaos.
- Chlorine-Free Bleach Only If Absolutely Necessary & No Fabric Softener – Bleach is for emergencies, not feline tantrums. And no, your clothes don’t need softener—cat cuddles already did the job.
- Tumble Dry on Low – Like your cat lounging lazily in the sun. Or, if you’re feeling extra cautious, hang dry for a longer, happier life.
- Iron Inside Out on Low – But don’t iron over the design unless you want to explain to the cat why their face is now… melted.
- No Dry Cleaning – Unless you enjoy perplexed looks from your cat.
